Analytical Drawing

In analytical drawing, students will learn how to simplify bewildering complexity to produce drawings which clarify structure and function. We take inspiration from the work of Manfred Maier (Basel School of Design). Maier based on his observation and analysis of natural and human made forms, believed that design should be rooted in reality and reflect the laws of nature

Master Studies

Historically, master studies were an important part of an artist’s training. The practice gave students an insight and ‘conversation’ with the original work and familiarity with the artist’s compositional structure. Furthermore, we gain access to the spirit of their artistic age. Working at your own pace from a master work, you will begin by making several thumbnail studies of the composition including: gesture, light and dark pattern, overlapping forms, and linear movement such as implied lines. Beyond composition, this is an ideal opportunity to study the artist’s use of tonal values. Drawings will be developed over several classes allowing time to work through the process.

Still Life

Still Life is one of the best practices for working on composition. Ignore the temptation to finish each object, instead set out a scaffolding for the whole composition. This will reveal unexpected correlation of forms and assist the inter-weaving of background, mid and foreground objects.

Memory and Composition

This well thought out course will challenge you to produce multi-figure compositions. Covering specific aids such as principles of composition, you will be given exercises to provoke the imagination and gradually adjust to working inventively. As a jazz musician improvises, memory drawing frees the hand for exaggeration and taps into imagination, allowing the artist to work with glimpsed gesture and expressive movement, not found in sustained poses.

This course best demonstrates the direction of the Drawing School, our aim to make classical drawing relevant in our times.
